Roy Ashburn

A conservative US state senator who has voted against gay rights consistently during his 14 years in government has came ‘out of the closet’ – he is gay!

Republican Roy Ashburn came out during a radio interview in California, for KERN radio, where he said, “I am gay… those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long.”

The 55-year-old divorced father-of-four has been on leave since an arrest last week on suspicion of driving under the influence. He said that his coming out was prompted by rumours that he had visited a gay nightclub before the arrest, which took place in Sacramento on 3 March, and felt he needed to address these rumours. So, I guess that means that the rumours were true :P

He insists that his voting on the gay rights bills reflected the way his constituents wanted him to vote, i.e. on their behalf, rather than him voting on his own “internal conflict”. (Pity he couldn’t make a stand, maybe stick to his own convictions, though I guess we sometimes punish politicians for doing just that as well. Hmm.)

Roy has a record for voting against gay rights measures. Last year, Mr Ashburn opposed a bill to establish a day of recognition to honour murdered gay rights activist Harvey Milk. He has also voted in the statehouse against efforts to expand anti-discrimination laws and recognise out-of-state gay marriages.

Peace, out! – Matt

New website!

By chocobo_crossing | Filed in GLYNI Announcements

Welcome!

Hey and welcome everyone to our newly designed website! We hope you like it, there are still a few things to be tweaked here and there but it’s about time it was unveiled!

You can still get access to all the information from before using the links across the top of the page. This information will soon be undergoing a major refresh and update – so keep coming back! You can also still get the most up-to-date GLYNI event schedule, it is now over on the right of your screen, and PinkNews is still shown on the right too.
New features are aplenty – now, anyone can register for our blog, we want everyone to be able to submit their content and have it displayed proudly on our website. We will have members only discussion pages on various issues, with commenting enabled across all the posts you can leave your feedback on any of our articles as well as submit your own in a simple to use web interface – it’s just as easy as Facebook!

We hope these new features will make up for the temporary suspension of new registrations on our GLYNI Message Board / Forum. Unfortunately, it has been deluged by Russian spambots since this time last year… :( so I have taken the step of preventing new sign-ups. Current users can still access, and all the posts are intact – I removed all the spam (I think!). I will keep it this way until we make a decision on where to go from here with the forums. In the meantime, you have plenty of ways to make your voice heard!

Contribute!

“So Matt, how do I contribute?” I hear you ask? Couldn’t be easier! Firstly, comments are enabled on all pages and posts, meaning you can leave your feedback either anonymously or, if you want people to know who you are ;), you can register for a GLYNI account by using the link *on the right*!

What does registering get you? Well it means that no-one can pose as you in discussions of course :P! If you also have a Gravatar account associated with your email address, your avatar will be shown on comments you make and, in the future, posts you make.
Speaking of posts, did I mention that registered members can submit their own articles, reviews, posts, thoughts, announcements and much more, AND have it displayed right on our homepage? Not only that, but as the website grows, members will gain access to the members only discussion pages, where we could discuss anything and everything?

It really is an exciting new chapter for our website, one which we hope that you will help us create – so sign up now!

Peace out!
-Matt

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is urging young men to open up and not cover up their problems with a campaign which aims to encourage males to speak out about their feelings before things get out of control.

Don’t cover up your problems, the award winning campaign by the PHA, was developed in response to Protect life: a shared vision. The Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan 2006–2011, which identified young men as a key target group. Recent figures show that 72% of suicides in Northern Ireland were males and suicides among young men aged 16–24 years were more than three times higher than those among young women of the same age.¹

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: “We know that young men have a tendency to hide how they are feeling and bottle up their problems. That is why they were identified as a key target group in the Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy.

“This award-winning campaign has been so successful because it carries a vitally important message, encouraging young men who are experiencing mental health problems to seek help by opening up and talking to someone. It is important that we reinforce this message to raise awareness of mental health issues among young men and the rest of the population so that people can get the support they need.”
Deirdre McNamee, Senior Manager for Public Health, PHA, said: “Our mental health influences how we think and feel about ourselves and others and how we interpret and deal with situations and events in our lives. Young men can find it difficult to open up and talk about their feelings for fear of it being seen as a sign of weakness. Instead they often choose to mask how they really feel, so we hope this campaign will encourage young men to talk to someone and get help if they need it, before their situation develops into a crisis.”

This particular campaign received the Mind Mental Health Media Award for Raising Public Awareness, which was awarded to the PHA in recognition of its effort to raise awareness of mental health among young men and encourage a more positive attitude to seeking help for themselves and others. It also helps to address the stigma associated with mental health and young men’s tendency to disguise their feelings.

A recent evaluation of the campaign showed that it had been successful in reaching a large proportion of the key audience, with 82% being aware of the campaign and 52% saying the campaign had prompted them to either think, discuss or take action for their own or someone else’s mental wellbeing. ²

While the campaign is aimed at encouraging young men to open up, it also urges the wider public to be more supportive of men, and encourage them to talk about their mental health. A wide range of organisations throughout Northern Ireland address these issues, one of which, Youth Action Northern Ireland, makes a significant contribution to the lives of young people here and, in particular, does a lot of focused work with young men.

Youth Action is a regional voluntary youth organisation that provides opportunities that unlock the potential of young people.

Michael McKenna, Youth Action Northern Ireland, said: “This campaign gets young men’s issues out into the open. The more exposure these issues get in public the better so that young men feel more comfortable discussing them confidentially with their peers, youth workers and teachers. We need to take the time to encourage young men to explore who they are and the everyday pressures they are facing, and develop ways of coping with these.

“Some forms of masculinity look at men as being strong, brave and courageous. We need to use this in our work with young men as it takes strength, bravery and courage to tell someone about the issues they are experiencing and the PHA’s campaign is one way of getting this message out to young men.”

The campaign will run from 1–31 March 2010, incorporating a mix of television, radio, cinema and online advertising. Leaflets and posters will also be distributed to GP practices and voluntary organisations working with young men as well as a range of mental health organisations. For more information relating to a range of mental health issues visit the campaign website, www.mindingyourhead.info

Music and Meaning

By MissMJ28 | Filed in Music Reviews

Passionate about music? …. then this is for you!!

Music has been around for centuries and has some significant influence on us all.  I like music because its has so many forms of interpretation, as in it means something different to each person.

Legendary musicians are hard to come by. I was, and I still am greatly influenced by Michael Jackson, and other people too, but mainly him.  I grew up listening to Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five since I was about six, so it was all I really knew growing up, music wise.  Michael Jackson’s lyrics, his music, dancing and his compassion towards others made me love and admire him. Ok, he’s had some bad press in his time, but just because the press is bad, it shouldn’t have to take away the good! :D

So yeah, that was me….. your turn!!

….. Who is your greatest influence?

….. What does their music mean to you, like is there any lyrics that really mean something to you?

The BNP – a far right conservative anti immigrant party has won 2 seats at Europe giving Nick Griffon, the party leader and one other candidate, the chance to access the EU’s vast resources to use in their campaign or xenophobic retribution on the UK for its pro multicultural policies.

The BNP nationally nicknamed Nazi’s or Fascists now have access to money of up to £500,000 in wages and a further £1 million if they are able to make a “group” coalition with 26 other candidates of far right agendas in Europe.

It seems that recently, the liberal democracy the UK prides itself on has continually been subverted by extremist fringes and attacked, a problem of liberalism. As a homophobic party who recently published a list called “Rapists, Buggers and thieves” (ironically adapted from Cher – a gay icon’s – “gypsies, tramps and thieves”) listing MPs who were convicted of paedophilia / rape, other crimes and the crime of being “gay”, the BNP are now at the forefront of politics.

This blog post is just a reminder for anyone who reads it. If you are dissatisfied with labour, conservatives or lib dems, vote for a positive party e.g. the greens or independent candidates, do not vote for the BNP! If you know anyone who would vote, EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE in the words of Tony Blair!!

American Liberal Democracy restricts rights!

By chocobo_crossing | Filed in LGBT News

Today, the Californian Supreme Court ruled to uphold the decision made by the state government to ban gay marriage. The ruling comes at a time of change in America as many states have introduced Gay Marriage bills, one big step back for a country once labelled the “land of the free”…

Unfortunately the Californian supreme court voted 6-1 to uphold the decision made by Governor Schwarzenegger and his Californian state government. All but Justice Carlos Moreno, the only democrat on the committee, voted against the repeal of the ban, placed back in November 2008. However, the 28,000 gay marriages that took place before the ban are still legal!

America, a place most know as one of the most diverse communities on earth, espousing western liberal democracy, a democracy that fought to give its citizens in 1792, is now a democracy that has removed the rights of its citizens as of the 26th May 2009. The introduction of Gay Marriage in California, something that would’ve astounded and made Harvey Milk proud has now been removed, as have the rights to marriage of loving men and women.

A lesson to be learned in this is never to give up. Even when governments and courts rule that you do not have the same rights as your neighbour, challenge their authority, you have the same ability as anyone, challenge everything, educate people, friends, family and strangers!!! End hate!
